The Villanova Report (Part 2)

Second part of our Villanova Scouting Report. Today we are speaking for Daniel Ochefu, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins.

Name: Daniel Ochefu
Class: Senior
Position: C
Height: 6'11
*Season stats: MPG:23.4, PER:27.2, PPG:10, RPG:7.5, BPG: 1.5, APG: 1.7

Daniel Ochefu, has an excellent size and length for a center. He stands at 6'11 with a wingspan of 7'3 and he weighs 245 pounds.

Ochefu has great potential as a blocker and rim protector, he is averaging 1.5 blocks per game and 2.6 blocks per 40 minutes.
As for his overall speed, I will say that he needs work for NBA level, Ochefu is not able to switch and defend smaller and explosive opponents.
In what he excels, is how good he can rebound the ball, he is a beast, no matter if we speak for offensive or defensive rebounds. He averaged 12.9 rebounds per 40 minutes. Ochefu is first in total rebound percentage for the 2015-2016 season. In more details he is first in defensive rebound percentage and fourth in offensive percentage.

Offensively, Ochefu is a well polished center, he has good foot work and a very good jump hook. Here we have to note that he really prefers to turn left, if you block him the left side he will have issues, he does not like to turn right.

Apart from his jump hook, Ochefu has a decent mid range jumper, he made 48% of his jumpers, a good percentage for a center.
Last but not least, I would like to mention his vision and passing abilities, both are in a very good level, especially the way he sees and passes the ball to the cutter. There are not many centers who are averaging 1.7 assist per game.

Overall, Daniel Ochefu has a great potential as a rim protector and some nice post moves. NBA teams should consider giving him a chance. They are not many players with his size and his basketball IQ.

Name: Mikal Bridges
Class: Freshman
Position: SG
Height: 6'7

*Season stats: MPG:20.3, PER:18.4, PPG:6.4, RPG:3.2

Mikal Bridges in my eyes, is the player with the highest potential of the Villanova squad.

A great athlete with an excellent length. He stands at 6'7 with a wingspan of 7'0"5, great wingspan for a shooting guard, even for NBA, additional to his length, Bridges is a quick and a high flyer athlete. The only disadvantage of his athletic package is his frame, needs work and he must spend a lot of time in the weight room.

Offensively, Bridges is pretty raw. He shot with less than 29% from behind the arc. As you understand with a percentage like that you cannot play a wing position at NBA.

Positives of Bridges offensive game, is that he is a good ball handler, who can even create his own shot, additional to that he is a great cutter, he has a feeling when to cut and he is a great finisher near the rim. Bridges converted 81.7% of his attempts near the rim.

Defensively, Mikal Bridges is a beast, a proper terminator. Has a top potential, his long arms combined with his lateral speed are allowing him to guard players from position 1 till 4.

Looking forward to his sophomore year, I am pretty sure we will speak again for him, especially when he will improve his 3-point shooting percentage. A kid with a really high ceiling.

Name: Josh Hart
Class: Junior
Position: SG
Height: 6'5

*Season stats: MPG:31.4, PER:23.4, PPG:15.5, RPG:6.8, APG:1.9

Josh Hart is a 6.5 shooting guard with a wingspan of 6'7"5, an average size for NBA level, but with a nice frame, a well build athlete.
Hart is a very good defender, his excellent frame and his good size for college are helping him a lot. Additional Hart is a hustle player, he will fight for every possession and for every inch, even when he defends bigger opponents he can hold his ground and he always tries to deny the ball.

Offensively, Josh Hart is playing with confidence, he can score with multiple ways. Probably the best aspect of his offensive game is how good he can finish near the rim. Hart is converting ~75% of his attempts near the rim, a very impressive number. Big factor to that, is how strong he is and how good he can post his opponents, also his turn around jumper from mid-close range is a smooth one.
Even though he is a great scorer near the rim, we cannot say the same for his game behind the arc. Hart shot with ~36% from behind the arc but most of the shots were is a catch and shoot situation. Moreover Hart will rarely create his own 3-point shot, actually from his made 3-point attempts 89% from them are assisted ones.

As for his playmaking abilities, we do not have a lot to say, but definitely there is a potential.

Overall, Josh Hart has NBA potential, a good athlete with an ok size and a good defender, the key to his NBA career is how much he can improve his shot behind the arc.

Name: Kris Jenkins
Class: Junior
Position: SF
Height: 6'6

*Season stats: MPG:28.4, PER:20.9, PPG:13.6, RPG:3.9, APG:2.2

And we kept the end for Kris Jenkins, the hero, the one who hit the game winning shoot vs North Carolina and Villanova won the NCAA championship for second time in their history.

Jenkins is a player full of question marks, I am really not sure if he can translate his game in to the next level. He is playing as forward but he is too small for a power forward, just 6'6 and with not long arms and too heavy for small forward, Jenkins weighs 240 lbs. Surprisingly Jenkins has a nice first step, a lot more explosive than what you think.
One of the biggest issue is his age, Jenkins is born at 1993 and you expect from an athlete of that age to be a lot more build. In my eyes this is the reason why most of the NBA teams will not look at him.

Offensively, Jenkins has some nice moves. First of all he is too strong for a college level athlete and more specific small forwards, so in most of the cases he can post them. Secondly, Jenkins is a good shooter, 66% of his overall attempts are from 3-point range and he converts ~39% of them. In most of the cases the defenders will close out quickly on him and he is able to fake and take a mid-range jumper. A decent shooter from mid-range, Jenkins converts 51% of them. I cannot say the same when he is penetrating, he lacks the athleticism to go till the end.

Even though Jenkins is a good scorer, his potential is very limited for NBA level and not only. Jenkins is a below the average athlete and that translates to the next level. Most of the NBA teams will not consider him as an option as there are many red-flags with his body and additional to that he is 22 years old, Jenkins is born at 1993, not so much of potential for NBA teams.

Still Jenkins has one more year of college basketball, (even though he declared for the NBA draft, I expect him to return to Villanova) and we will continue keeping a track of his improvement.

Another player from Villanova for whom I expect to speak in the near future, is backup point guard Jalen Brunson, he struggled to find a role during his freshman year, but now without Arcidiacono he should have an increased one.
