Name: Ryan Arcidiacono
Class: Senior
Position: PG
Height: 6'4"5
*Season stats: MPG:32.1, PER:19.2, PPG:12.5, RPG:2.9, APG: 4.2
What to say about that kid, is one of my favorite players, he is not the most talented or the best athlete, but still is a pleasure to watch Arcidiacono. He was named the Final Four Most Outstanding Player of the year and there are some good reasons for that.
An average athlete, not the fastest or the most explosive on the court, not even the strongest one. But Arcidiacono is a very well trained athlete and he has a good size for point guard, he stands at 6'4.
Defensively Arcidiacono is a good defender, he has very active hands and good lateral speed, I would not say that he is a top individual defender, or that he has great potential as defender, but he is a very good team defender. He knows where to send the offense and how his team wants to defend, he is a fundamental defender.
Offensively he is an OK shooter, nothing fancy, cannot be ignored and by any chance, you do not want to play him under in pick & roll situations. Arcidiacono made 39% of his 3-point attempts. In more details, 52% of his shots are behind the arc. He is taking 30% of his attempts from mid-range and converts 39% of them. Not the best percentage from mid range and are low value shots.
I would like to see Arcidiacono driving more to the basket, but with his athleticism is not easy. Actually when he does it, he is a very good finisher near the basket with a really nice floater, he is taking just 18% of his attempts near the rim and he converts 69% of them. Additional to all these, Arcidiacono is able to post smaller opponents. Another positive of Arcidiacono game, is that even though he is a true point guard, he can play off the ball, he does not need the ball in his hands to be positive for his team.
Playmaking, probably the best aspect of Arcidiacono game, very good ball-handler with an excellent vision and he is a very good passer, Arcidiacono reads the game and the defense in an extremely mature level. He will not rush the play and he will not make easy mistakes, Arcidiacono style of play is a low mistake one, his assist/turnover ratio is 2.8.
Potential, most probably Arcidiacono will not hear his name at the NBA draft night, for sure some teams will consider him as an undrafted one, but I expect him to find a (guarantee) contract in Europe, do not forget that he has an Italian passport also.
Name: Darryl Reynolds
Class: Junior
Position: C/PF
Height: 6'8
*Season stats: MPG:17.1, PPG:3.6 , RPG:4.5
Reynolds is a player with no potential for NBA, but he should be able to have a decent career overseas. We are going to judge him by that. Still, is early to discuss for his next step as he has 1 more year in college and most probably he will be the starter in center position.
His true position overseas should be as a center, Reynolds has a well build body, with a very good length, unfortunately I am not aware of his wingspan. A strong athlete, who cannot be pushed easily on the post, Reynolds is able to hold his position in an above of the average level.
Reynolds has the length to become a good rim protector. Reynolds is not so quick but his overall speed is above average, he can switch in D and make the life of the guards difficult, he is also able and he knows how to go low and defend smaller and faster opponents, good lateral speed.
Offensively, Reynolds has no post moves or range, he can make some mid-range uncontested jump shots, but nothing more. In what Reynolds is good, is after pick and roll, Reynolds is a very good screener and he can cut fast and strong to the basket. Apart from that he is a very raw offensive player. Last but not least, we can to comment his free throw percentage, he is converting 72.3% of his free throw attempts, a very good to an excellent number for a center.
Overall, Reynolds is a high energy guy who can make the difference on the defensive end, he needs to work a lot his offensive package and I would like to see him adding a mid-range jumper or a go to move.
Name: Phil Booth
Class: Sophomore
Position: PG
Height: 6'2
*Season stats: MPG:22.4, PER:, PPG:7, RPG:2.1, APG:2.1
The X factor of the NCAA final at NRG arena, he came to the game by averaging 7 points per game and he light it up. He scored 20 points with missing just one shot!
Booth has a good size for PG, But he should add some frame to his body. He possesses average speed and generally his athletic package is average.
Offensively now, Booth shooting percentage went down from his freshman year. It declined 20% approximately, his field goal percentage dropped from 55% to 34% and same goes for his true shooting percentage, from 70% dropped to 50%.
Booth has a quick and soft shooting release, I expect Booth to improve his shooting percentage next year, not sure if he will be able to match his freshman year percentage.
I do not have any comments for his playmaking abilities, he improved his assist rate from 1.4 to 2.1, but the per game ratio is the same! Mainly reason is the present of Arcidiacono.
Overall, Phil Booth is a player who should have a bigger role from next year and he will be judged better. Without Arcidiacono he should be the starting point guard of Villanova next to Josh Hart. We will have our eyes on him
